Graduate and Advanced Undergraduates are eligible to participate in the course.

Travel Dates: March 16-23, 2025 (Spring Break)

Tentative Travel Dates: May 24, 2025 - Jun. 1, 2025 (Spring 2nd, 7-Week Session)
Priority Application Date is Monday, Dec. 2, 2024. If an applicant is accepted they should be notified by the Merrick School of Business by Monday, Dec. 9, 2024.

Cost at A Glance

  • Travel Costs  | (airfare, hotel, all activities, local travel, airport shuttles, all breakfasts) = $3,250*.

  • Additional costs | Some meals, passport and visa expenses, if applicable, medical vaccination, if applicable, and additional activities of your choosing.

*Scholarship

If you apply and are awarded Wright Global Scholars funds (a value up to $1,500) it will defer a portion of the travel costs. $3,250 minus $1,500 = $1,750in travel costs to you.

Students enrolled in a Merrick School of Business academic program are eligible for Wright Global Scholars funding. Students may receive one-time funding as an undergraduate and one-time funding as a graduate student.

Course: MGMT 498 / MGMT 798 (3 credits)

The Global Field Study in Business, Austria will expose students to the business practices, culture, and people in Austria.

To better understand and succeed in global business today, there is no better way than direct experience through immersing oneself in a foreign environment. This course will provide an opportunity for lectures and discussion with local experts and students regarding key themes of economic, political and cultural importance to business. The course will engage students in field visits to companies, government agencies and other organizations located abroad. 

 

Kathryn Demarest, associate dean and Eleftherios Michael, director of diversity and international services will lead the course.

This course is being offered in the Second 7 Week session of Spring 2025. Travel dates are Saturday, May 24, 2025 - Sunday June 1, 2025.
 
Embark on a captivating journey through Austria, starting with a cultural and professional exploration of Vienna, where you'll visit renowned local companies and cultural sites, immersing yourself in the city's rich history. Wander through Vienna's historic streets, marveling at iconic sites such as the Schönbrunn Palace and the vibrant Naschmarkt. Continue your adventure in Innsbruck, where the stunning Alpine scenery complements visits to innovative local businesses and educational institutions. This trip offers a perfect blend of dynamic industry insights, academic engagement, and unforgettable cultural experiences amidst Austria’s breathtaking landscapes.

During the pre-trip meetings, students will gain an understanding of the business environment in Austria.

Thursday, May 22 | Meet the group at BWI at 7 pm for a 9:25 departure to Frankfurt, Germany. 

Friday, May 23 | Arrive in Frankfurt, Germany and board a flight to Vienna, Austria. Upon arrival in Vienna, we will check into the hotel, meet our local host, and enjoy a welcome dinner at a local Viennese restaurant. 

Saturday, May 24 | Enjoy a walking tour of Vienna in the morning followed by a company visit in the afternoon.  

Sunday, May 25 | Interested participants may wish to attend the morning service at St. Stephen’s Cathedral. We will visit the Kunsthistorisches, one of the world’s most famous art museums, followed by an unforgettable opportunity to explore the Schonbrunn Palace. 

Monday, May 26 | Depart from Vienna and take a motorcoach to Durnstein. Explore this charming town and board a Danube River cruise to the town of Melk and its world-famous Benedictine Abbey. Arrive in Salzburg and check into the hotel. 

Tuesday, May 27 | Enjoy a walking tour of Salzburg followed by a company visit in the afternoon. 

Wednesday, May 28 | Visit Hohensalzburg Castle in the morning followed by a company visit in the afternoon. 

Thursday, May 29 | Board the train to Innsbruck and check into your hotel. Enjoy a walking tour of Innsbruck in the afternoon. 

Friday, May 30 | Enjoy a visit to two local companies and an optional visit to MCI / The Entrepreneurial School. 

Saturday, May 31 | Take a trip to the “Top of Innsbruck” today, traveling by funicular and cable car. Join us for a farewell dinner of Austrian delights at a local restaurant. 

Sunday, June 1 | Travel by train from Innsbruck to Frankfurt. You'll see green meadows, charming villages, and perhaps some mountain lakes. The landscape gradually transitions from high Alpine terrain to rolling hills and forests. The journey will take you through parts of the Bavarian countryside, characterized by picturesque villages, farmland, and traditional German architecture. Board our 4:30 pm return flight, arriving at BWI at 7:25 pm. 

There will be two mandatory pre-trip meetings and attendance is required for all participants (dates pending).
 
An optional pre-trip visit to the Austrian embassy will be scheduled in April 2025 and all participants are strongly encouraged to attend.

 The total student cost for airfare, lodging, most local transportation, and trip organization is approximately $3,250.

In addition to travel costs, normal semester tuition and fees will apply for this three-credit (3cr) course.

Travel Fee Payment Schedule:
  • Expected Initial Deposit: $500 due by Friday, January 30, 20251
  • Expected Final Payment: $1,250 due by Thursday, February 27, 20252
  • Course Tuition Due: Tuesday, April 22, 2025. See the academic calendar.

Note:

1 All payments are completely non-refundable. In addition to the travel costs, students are responsible for meals, incidental expenses and the tuition and fees associated with this three-credit hour course in the Summer 2025 semester.
2 Final payment amount is dependent upon individual scholarship award.

The Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,500 to eligible students.

Course Tuition Due: Tuesday, Dec. 17, 2024.

 Students will be given permission to enroll in MGMT 498/798 for Spring. Registration for the Spring semester begins Oct. 27, 2024. Approved students will be given permission to enroll in this course and will receive registration instructions after the initial deposit is collected.
