Global Field Study

Graduate and Advanced Undergraduates are eligible to participate in the course.

Travel Dates: January 5-12, 2025 (Winter Break)
  • Priority Application Date is Oct. 1, 2024.
  • If an applicant is accepted, they should be notified by the Merrick School of Business by Monday, Oct. 7, 2024. 

Cost at A Glance

  • Travel Costs  | (airfare, hotel, all activities, local travel, airport shuttles, all breakfasts) = $3,000*.  
  • Course Tuition and Fees | See UBalt's tuition page. 
  • Additional costs | Some meals, passport and visa expenses, if applicable, medical vaccination, if applicable, and additional activities of your choosing.

*Scholarship

If you apply and are awarded Wright Global Scholars funds (a value up to $1,500) it will defer a portion of the travel costs. $3,000 minus $1,500 = $1,500 in travel costs to you.

Students enrolled in a Merrick School of Business academic program are eligible for Wright Global Scholars funding. Students may receive one-time funding as an undergraduate and one-time funding as a graduate student.

Course: MGMT 498 / MGMT 798 (3 credits)

The Global Field Study in Business, Panama will expose students to the business practices, culture, and people in Panama.

To better understand and succeed in global business today, there is no better way than direct experience through immersing oneself in a foreign environment. This course will provide an opportunity for lectures and discussion with local experts and students regarding key themes of economic, political and cultural importance to business. The course will engage students in field visits to companies, government agencies and other organizations located abroad. 

 

 Dr. Kevin Wynne, associate professor of management and Kathea Smith, assistant dean, will lead the course.

This course is being offered in the Winter Semester of 2025. Travel dates are Sunday, January 5 - Sunday, January 12, 2025.
 
Our January Global Field Study takes students to Panama City, Panama. Location defines the country of Panama, where east meets west, connecting the Atlantic and Pacific Oceans, and north meets south, connecting North and Central America to South America. Experience the vibrant pulse of Panama City with a multifaceted trip that includes visits to dynamic company offices, offering a glimpse into the city’s thriving business environment. Explore the engineering marvel of the Panama Canal, witnessing firsthand the monumental achievement that connects oceans and drives global trade. Immerse yourself in local culture by exploring historical sites such as Casco Viejo, while also venturing out to an indigenous village to gain insight into the rich traditions and 

 

Note: Company visits and cultural attractions are subject to change. 

 

During the pre-trip meetings, students will gain an understanding of the business environment in Panama.  More Details to come.
  • Saturday, Nov. 16, 2024, from 10 a.m. - 12-noon, (on-campus)
  • Saturday, Dec. 14, 2024, from 10 a.m. - 12-noon, (Zoom)

 The total student cost for airfare, lodging, most local transportation, and trip organization is approximately $3,000.

In addition to travel costs, normal semester tuition and fees will apply for this three-credit (3cr) course.

Travel Fee Payment Schedule:
  • Expected Initial Deposit: $500 due by Tuesday, Oct. 15,  20241
  • Expected Final Payment: $1,200 due by Friday, Nov. 15, 20242
  • Course Tuition Due: Tuesday, Nov. 19, 2024. See the academic calendar.

Note:

1 All payments are completely non-refundable. In addition to the travel costs, students are responsible for meals, incidental expenses and the tuition and fees associated with this three-credit hour course in the Spring 2025 semester.
2 Final payment amount is dependent upon individual scholarship award.

The Wright Global Scholars fund will provide scholarships up to a maximum of $1,500 to eligible students.

Course Tuition Due: Tuesday, Nov. 19 2024.

 Students will be given permission to enroll in MGMT 498/798 for Spring. Registration for the Spring semester begins Oct. 29, 2024. Approved students will be given permission to enroll in this course and will receive registration instructions after the initial deposit is collected.

 

To obtain approval for this Field Study you must complete the Global Field Study Application Form. All approval and scholarship forms should be submitted to Kathea Smith, assistant dean (ksmith@ubalt.edu).
