This posting is specifically for the Innocence Project Clinic Fellowship, although Fellowships in other areas of practice may also be available; each position has its own application portal.
Students in the Innocence Project Clinic review records, interview clients and witnesses, conduct legal research, devise investigative strategies, draft pleadings and argue motions in cases involving claims of wrongful conviction. Students develop an understanding of the post-conviction process and the various scientific issues that have emerged that impact on the reliability of eyewitness identification, forensic evidence, and police interrogation methods.
The fellowship focuses its first year on the skills of teaching, from crafting and leading seminars to facilitating supervision meetings with student-attorneys. The second year of the fellowship focuses on developing legal scholarship. In the third year, we support the Fellow to go on the clinical teaching job market. In addition to teaching, supervision, and legal scholarship, during winter and summer breaks in the academic calendar, when students are not enrolled, the Fellow also covers client matters, including matters for other clinics that are within the Fellow’s expertise.
Required Qualifications: Excellent oral and written communication skills; a strong academic record and/or other indicia of high-performance ability; commitment to work for Low-Income and immigrant clients; and a strong interest in teaching. Three years of experience as a practicing lawyer is required, along with one year of practicing criminal law, with experience relating to wrongful convictions preferred. This position is a three-year contractual appointment.
Be a member of the Maryland Bar or be licensed in another state and willing to become administratively certified as a clinic supervising attorney under the Maryland Rules.
Salary: The current salary is $70,000. The position includes full benefits, including retirement (while subject to change, in past years this has included a generous match) and tuition remission. In addition, this position includes research support (for example, research assistant support and/or book allowance) and a travel allowance to attend relevant conferences and workshops.
