Students are responsible for purchasing their commencement regalia and can do so in one of two ways- the bookstore or online. Regalia will be available for purchase online at the dates specified on the Commencement Information Page. Students from Universities at Shady Grove will be contacted regarding how they can order regalia.

  • Regalia costs are more online and an additional cost for shipping will be applied.
  • Regalia that is purchased online will not be mailed to students until 5-10 days before the ceremony. Therefore, please plan accordingly. 

The Hive also has announcements, gifts, frames, and other items for graduates. Visit the bookstore website or visit the store for details.

• Undergraduate students should have a black robe, black cap, and tassel.
• Graduate students should have a black robe, black cap, tassel and a hood that corresponds with the appropriate program.The hooding is a part of the Commencement ceremony on stage, so students will be asked to fold the hood and process in with it on their arm. Instructions will be given at commencement regarding this. 
• Doctoral students should have a black robe, tam and hood that corresponds with the appropriate program.
• If you have earned a higher degree and are earning an additional degree at UBalt, you can wear the regalia for your highest degree earned. However, you are expected to purchase a hood if recieving your Masters or Doctorate to take part in the hooding process of Commencement. For example- students who are graduating with their JD prior to earning their masters through the joint program can wear their Law regalia, and purchase a hood separately for Commencement day.

• There are items on the market to assist with the caps that are worn by Undergraduate and Graduate students. One such company is called Grad Remix. Their graduation cap insert is a 2 piece system that transforms the graduation cap to fit better.   

Regalia Prices: Please note that these are updated the semester once regalia is made available to purchase. The prices below are for the bookstore, and the online prices are slightly higher. Prices are subject to change and will be updated closer to when regalia is made available.

Reduced Price Regalia 
The request for reduced price regalia form will be open in March prior to Grad Fest.  The form will stay open until all regalia is claimed.  Students will be emailed if they have recieved reduced price regalia with instructions to claim.  Please visit the main commencement page to apply during the limited time frame.

Cords and Stoles
Cords and stoles for student or national organizations are handled by the individual honors organizations. Students may wear any cords or stoles they wish on commencement day. For more information about receiving these items, please be in contact with the specific organization advisor.

Helen P. Denit Honors students will be given their cords on stage.
