Our dual approach allows lawyers and accountants to interact in a unique classroom environment. Offering the program jointly through the School of Law and the Merrick School of Business provides the robust training necessary for today's tax practitioners. Our students benefit from learning alongside working professionals seeking career enhancement and advancement.
For business students, the Masters of Science in Taxation program, when combined with required accounting courses, may fulfill the 150-hour education requirement for a Certified Public Accountant license in Maryland.
Our faculty are not only experts in the tax field but also are experienced professors who know how to lead students through a challenging and rewarding curriculum. Included among the graduate tax professors are full-time School of Law faculty, prominent practitioners in the Baltimore and Washington DC, area, Internal Revenue Service officials, local government officials, and US Tax Courts judges.
To meet the busy schedules of working lawyers and accountants, classes are offered weekday evenings. If you take two classes per semester, you can complete the degree in two to three academic years. Regular attendance and active class participation are essential to success in the program. Our students may attend courses in person, or synchronously online, or online asynchronously at your convenience. Our students may choose one, two, or all three of these options.
The tuition is consistently affordable. LL.M. and M.S. students pay the same tuition and fees, which are set by the Board of Regents of the University System of Maryland. Tuition and fees are subject to change. Get current tuition information. Tuition is a flat rate with no difference between out of state and in-state.
With this degree, you'll be prepared to succeed in the increasingly complex field of taxation. You'll be able to serve the needs of your local legal, accounting, public sector, and private business communities. Our students develop:
Since 1987, hundreds of professionals have benefited from the advanced tax training provided by the Graduate Tax Program, the only one of its kind in Maryland.
The program was created in response to the increasing complexity of the field and its critical impact on the effective management of business, financial, industrial, governmental and nonprofit organizations. The courses are geared toward tax advisers in the legal and accounting professions and those involved in developing fiscal policy and managing public and nonprofit organizations. The program not only prepares students for careers as professional tax advisers, but it also sharpens their knowledge and skills through a sophisticated, challenging educational environment.
found the Graduate Tax Program to be rich in high-level content, comprehensive in scope and practical in its discussions of tax theory and compliance. I gained technical knowledge from tax attorneys and practitioners and built long-lasting relationships with professors and student colleagues.
While I may not immediately know the answer to a tax question, the UBalt program provided me the skills necessary to understand the issues, research the options and provide effective counsel to my clients on most tax matters that arise. My education in UBalt's LL.M. in Tax program has been an invaluable asset to my development as a tax lawyer.
