Preservation Goals

Special Collections and Archives aims to undertake preventive conservation strategies, coupled with interventionist conservation treatments as necessary, in order to address the needs of the collections. This work aims to ensure access to the collections for both the short- and the long-term. The staff endeavors to follow best practices according to archival, library, and museum professional organizations which may result in delayed or cost-intensive treatments, rehousing, and/or reformatting. The archives may undertake the creation of preservation copies of copyrighted materials under Section 108 of US Copyright Law. All preservation formats, standards, and external vendors chosen are frequently revisited and discussed by the department; however, they are non-negotiable with researchers.
