The Office of Student Support is committed to supporting those who may struggle with substance use. Our office is ready to provide assistance, information, and referrals to any member of the UBalt Community or their loved one.
Through this program, the Clinical Case Manager (CCM) works with students to learn about their specific situation, needs, and concerns regarding substance use. During the conversation, the CCM may provide information or referrals to local agencies including the Student Assistance Program.
The Office of Student Support strives to guide and empower individuals to make informed decisions about their health and future goals. It is important to note that depending on everyone's circumstances, there may be a need to involve additional offices.

• Disrupted sleep

• Missed work or social engagements due to use
• Change in overall attitude and personality with no identifiable cause
• Increased tolerance or needing more of the substance to achieve the same effect

The utmost care will be taken with all information that is shared with the Clinical Case Manager and the Office of Student Support. Only when sharing of information is required by law as described below or may prove beneficial by connecting the student with resources within the University or broader community will it be considered. In these instances, every effort will be made to partner with the student in the decision-making process where possible. The information shared is governed by the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA).
Additionally, information shared as part of the intake with the Clinical Case Manager may be shared with the Student Assistance Program if deemed necessary by the Clinical Case Manager. Once the information is shared with the Student Assistance Program it becomes protected under the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA). In which case, any information shared with the Student Assistance Program cannot be shared without the student’s permission unless there is:
• An imminent threat to the safety of self or others
• An imminent risk of self-harm to self or others
• Any reportable abuse/neglect of a child or a vulnerable adult
To refer yourself, another student, or to receive information for a loved one, complete the online COMPASS referral form. Referrals can be made 24 hours a day but will only be answered when the Clinical Case Manager is in the office.
If you think that you or someone you know is in immediate need of help, you can call 911 for the University of Maryland, Baltimore Police Department or local emergency personnel.
The University will always seek to provide support when a student comes forward to share that they are struggling with addiction. However, in some instances where there is a direct negative impact on the campus community, disruption or other serious outcomes the University may proceed with conduct charges as appropriate.
